Paul Rangell & Emily Abbink -- Tohono O'odham fiddle tradition
Paul Rangell & Emily Abbink: The Tohono O’odham fiddle tradition of southern Arizona
The Tohono O'odham fiddle music is European dance music seen through the lens and sensibilities of the Native American players. Over a period of about two hundred years, the music of the Tohono O'odham evolved as it passed from the missionaries to the native inhabitants.  Paul Rangell, accompanied by Emily Abbink on guitar, will be teaching a sampling of these rhythms including a polka, shotis, mazurka, cuadrilla and a two-step. The Gu-Achi Fiddlers, a unique Tohono O'odham quintet, played these tunes mostly in their village for ceremonial and social gatherings.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn about and play this wonderful, yet often overlooked, music.
Level: All levels welcome.
Demonstrated on fiddle, accompanying guitar chords will be provided. Mandolin, guitar, concertina, banjo and other instruments are encouraged to learn the melodies so you can pass them along!
This is a Zoom event. FREE tickets will be available this week on Eventbrite!
